Donnie Porter

My friend, the OTHER Skipper.......

Brother you worked at James Dennis' IGA just before i went to work there and you went away to the Marine Corps. Vietnam was raging about that time and you were one of my first friends to go. You were fresh out of Boot Camp and you had barely left us. Then one day when I was at work at Dennis' store you came in on crutches.........

You were in 'Nam maybe two months when you were hit by an 81mm mortar round and, because it "had your name on it", you never heard it come out of the tube. There you were, on crutches, with a huge scar across the back of your head where shrapnel had left its mark.......a good inch and half wide and maybe five inches long. You were my hero! You'd lost about 50 pounds but were as spunky as ever. You had that same broad smile that we all remember you for, and you MADE it! We were blessed because you had survived!

Even so, you left us far too soon........rest in peace my brother.
